OPI celebrates Grease 40th anniversary

Back in 1978, Grease producers probably would not excpect that this musical movie could turn from a blockbuster to a “franchise”, a brand.

In fact, it is not a case that now Grease is one of the few hollywood franchises honored with an almost complete licensing creative styleguide, which with captions, images, characters treatments, inspire merchandisers and licensees since those times.

While turning 40 this year, Grease is back again, with a restored version hitting the cinemas in USA in April, and the obligatory DVD, a collector delicacy complete with lyrics booklet and special video contents.

Waiting to see other collaborations coming along, this is a not-so-obvious celebration we found recently at Cosmoprof, the global trade fair for cosmetics professionals: OPI Grease 40th Anniversary limited edition.

The world leader in the professional nail care industry found colour inspiration from Grease characters: the Pink Ladies’ jackets, Sandy’s outfit, Danny’s leather coat. And from “Don’t cry Over Spilled Milkshakes” cream white to “Hopelessly Devoted to OPI” pink, from Summer Loving Having a Blast” orange, to “Chills Are Multyplying!” electric blue, this collection of 12 colors will inspire the consumer fans as well.

Although the range will be ready for beauty salons worldwide on May 1st, the pre-order battle is already on the web, from Amazon to cosmetics specialists web sellers.

This seems not only a nostalgia driven anniversary, and the consumer target could be unsuspectedly way broader than the hard-core first viewers: with a long standing musical season and a passionate fan base worldwide, OPI Grease limited edition can appeal from millennials on.
