It is hard to find what McDonald’s and fashion designer Anna Sui have in common, but odd couples is one of the things we like the most.
Interesting and unusual but unmistakably brilliant. This partnership nothing has to do with the couture collection designed by Jeremy Scott for Moschino in 2014 inspired to McDonald’s fast food icon.
This time is the fast food giant that has tapped the Chinese-American designer to create a limited edition of red envelopes for a multi-pronged campaign to launch a new 1, 2, 3 dollar menu, for foods like the McChicken sandwich, Sausage McMuffin with Egg, Triple Cheeseburger, and Happy Meal and to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
For the ones who are not familiar with the Chinese celebration of the New Year, red envelopes are traditionally filled with money and distributed as gifts during the three-week holiday.
The clever campaign seems to suggest that any gift money received by friends and family can be used to buy several meal deals at once.
The red envelopes create by Anna Sui feature a rendition of popular Asian dog breeds like the Pug and Shiba Inu blended into the designs with her signature style. The limited edition envelopes had been distributed last Tuesday January 23 at a promotional event for a lucky few in San Francisco, one of the cities with the biggest Chinese community of the US. McDonald’s also unveiled the new 1, 2, and 3 dollar menu-inspired arcade game that incorporates Anna Sui’s designs. Anyone who played received a red envelope and had the chance to win additional prizes.
Fans can also win a red envelope through influencers Leenda D (@LeendaDAvenue) and Miss Gina Darling (@MissGinaDarling), who will be giving away limited quantities through social media sweepstakes.
“I’m thrilled to team up with McDonald’s to recognize such an important cultural holiday,” said Anna Sui. “These envelopes re-imagine centuries-old traditions by celebrating diversity and its power to bring forth new ideas.” Check out McDonald’s and Anna Sui’s full video detailing their collaboration.
